SIMON CHAPUT
(French, b. 1952)
Although he travels extensively, Simon Chaput, a French native, has made New York his home base for almost twenty years. His early photographic work, from the late 1990s, focused on the dynamic and abstracted architectural shapes of the ancient stone observatories of Jay Singh in Jaipur, India and at the other extreme, New York City's skyscrapers. A more recent series examines the female form. By reversing the perception of positive and negative space, a thin white calligraphic silhouette set-off against a velvet black background is the sole allusion to the body. He is now working on large scale prints of waterfalls.
Chaput's editorial work includes photo essays on an ancient culture in Columbia and the Zen Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh. His photographs have appeared in Condé Nast Traveler, Daily Telegraph, L'Express, Le Figaro, Merian, Mirabella, New Women, New York, The New York Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The San Francisco Chronicle, and Smithsonian Air. He has also worked closely with Christo and Jean Claude on many of their projects and exhibitions throughout the world.
Chaput's photographs have been the subject of solo exhibitions in New York, Antwerp, Paris, and Japan. They can be found in private and institutional collections in France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, U.K., Mexico, Brazil, Australia, Japan as well as the US. He is the recipient of a Henry Luce Foundation grant for photography.
